The Chapter is pleased to participate this year in the Phi Beta Kappa Society’s Visiting Scholar program. With co-sponsorship of the Departments of History and of Ancient Greek and Roman Studies, we hosted a two-day visit, September 7–8, 2023, by Suzanne L. Marchand, Boyd Professor of History at Louisiana State University.
Professor Marchand has researched and published in the history of the humanities, especially classical studies, art history, anthropology, history, and theology in modern Europe, as well as in the history of porcelain and related topics in the history of material culture and consumption in Central Europe. The book on which she is now working is tentatively entitled “Herodotus and the Instabilities of Western Civilization.”
The main event in the PBK Visiting Scholar Program is a public lecture aimed at a general audience. Professor Marchand spoke on “Archaeology, the Bible, and Classical Antiquity in the 19th Century” on Thursday, September 7, at 5pm in the Maude Fife Room (315 Wheeler Hall).
Professor Marchand also met with students and faculty for meals and in informal settings. She also gave a more specialized seminar, drawn from her book in progress, on the topic “Tracking Herodotus’ Readers since 1700: The Travails of Writing Reception History.” on Friday, September 8 at 3pm in 3205 Dwinelle Hall.
